The National Service Scheme (NSS) Award for the year 2018-19 is given to 42 awardees in 3 different categories like University/ +2 Council, NSS Units and their Programme Officers and NSS Volunteers in recognition of her exemplary and commendable social service.

Every year the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Department of Youth Affairs confers the National Service Scheme Award to recognize and reward outstanding contributions towards voluntary community service made by the Universities/Colleges, (+2) Councils, Senior Secondary, NSS Units/ Programme Officers and NSS Volunteers, with a view to further promote NSS in the country. At present, NSS has about 40 lakh volunteers on its rolls spread over the country. This scheme was launched in the year 1969 with the primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. The ideological orientation of the NSS is inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Very appropriately, the motto of NSS is “NOT ME, BUT YOU”.

True to the motto of NSS: ‘Not me but you’ Sr. Sweta gave her best in helping the downtrodden and needy in the adopted village of Maram community. Supported by the Principal of the College Fr. (Dr.) K.O. Sebastian, she was able to involve her volunteers and the local community in building and reparation of public toilets and water tanks as a part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Briefly, Sr. Sweta and her NSS volunteers have worked on issues of social relevance, which keep evolving in response to the needs of the community, through regular and special camping activities. Such issues included literacy and education, health, family welfare and nutrition, environment conservation, social service programmes, programmes for empowerment of women, programmes connected with economic development activities, rescue and relief during calamities, etc. Sister Shwetha a registered organ donor had donated eight times.

Keen to uplift the villages she transformed the nearby villages through various cleanliness drives, health-immunization programmes, HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns, social awareness rallies, adult literacy programmes and malaria eradication programmes. Contributing towards maintaining a sanitized environment in the local community she has helped in constructing public toilets, urinals, waiting sheds, drainages, compost pits and water ponds.

Contributing to the environmental upkeep as called on by the Holy Father Pope Francis in “Laudato Si” and promoting the Shwachh Bharath Abhiyan, her volunteers made around 300 dustbins from tins an bamboos. Determined to contribute to a cleaner natural environment for all she has always propagated the usage of biodegradable dustbins made of bamboo. Seeing the plight of lakhs of people affected by the Kerala floods, she undertook a massive fund-raising campaign.

This is not the first time that Sr. Swethas contributions are recognized. Under her guidance and prayer her unit was awarded the best Unit of Manipur State in 2015. Sr. Sweta was also awarded as the Best NSS Programme Officer. During her service-oriented tenure, she was graced with 3 National Awards namely, SBSI 2018, SBSI 2019 and Best Coordinator of Red Ribbon Club.

The President congratulated all the winners and expressed being privileged that he is addressing service minded people. “Service is very much part of our value system of our lives” quoted the President during the ceremony. Sr. Sweta William Parmar remains true to this cause and is a great inspiration to the present and upcoming generation.
